We provide an adaptable, trusted-advisory role for our clients: engaging CIOs and/or their direct reports in a part-time collaboration, typically 2-3 days a month, spread across the month.
We understand that CIOs have ever-increasing challenges with which to contend (outlined in I'm a CIO...). It can be lonely at the top: being confident, showing confidence to your staff, balancing all those challenges, and more. Even with an effective leadership team, they can sometimes be too close. It is, therefore, useful to have an independent advisor, with well-rounded experience, who can help by:
Similarly, whereas [expensive] consultancies may only engage for initial transformations, often done to you rather than with you, we engage to guide you while embedding capabilities and improving maturity and culture.
We bring our consulting experience, knowledge and listening/problem-solving techniques to work with you to:
We achieve this by switching between the different advisory modes of coach, mentor (or consultant*) as most applicable for the situation at hand.
* Consultancy services typically require longer, deeper & broader engagement. They are therefore not typically part of a CIO Advisory engagement. However, any such requirement will be discussed at the time...and you will have the benefit of continuity of services.
Different Advisory Modes | Coach | Mentor | Consultant |
---|---|---|---|
Focus of Work | Deals with the present | Focuses mainly on development of the individual | Deals with problems, provides expertise |
Relationship | Coach helps client discover own answer | Mentor has the answer | Consultant has the answer |
Process | Collaborates with client, who remains accountable | Observes & provides guidance | Evaluates a situation and advises |
As part of our own Capability Maturity Model from our own experience our clients had faced, we have identified typical situations or problems that you may have observed in your own organization.
The below is just a sample of some of the challenges that our clients had encountered before engaging, often not even realizing the root cause(s), just the symptoms, until we have engaged:
You have a great team
...but they are all so busy on the day-to-day operational or tactical activities, we are missing or at risk of missing strategic targets.
You have a great team
...but are finding it difficult to retain and motivate them.
You and your team are great at supporting and encouraging each other
...but, like most things, you and/or they would love to get the validation from a fresh set of eyes that obvious opportunities or alternatives are not being missed (and most consultancies won't engage for such advisory work without a high day rate).
You have paid a lot of money for a large, expensive consultancy to help you with a significant transformation (e.g. IT Strategy/Operating Model, Agile)
...but this is a 3-5 year journey and now you're on your own to deliver and embed it into your organization. You're not sure if you can stay on course, especially while maintaining the buy-in of your team.
Your company has a Corporate Strategy and an IT Strategy
...but you're not too sure how well you are doing at achieving either of them.
The lines of business have so many IT projects they want us to do
...but you are finding it difficult to prioritize, schedule & deliver them, risking more 'Shadow IT'.
Your business has a great opportunity for growth
...but many of your IT systems are no longer current.
Your IT function is doing a great job for business-as-usual
...but it is not enabling new business (too costly, takes too long).
Your IT function (and outsource partners) deliver good quality project change following established frameworks
...but there is just so much documentation during the process. Is it all necessary?
Your IT function is maxed out delivering lots of change
...but it all just seems to be getting more difficult to manage.
